Research Front Cover 2: MOJO

MOJO is a popular music magazine published by Bauer, monthly, in the United Kingdom. Following the success of the magazine "Q", publishers were looking for a title which would cater for the burgeoning interest in classic rock music. MOJO was first published on 15th October 1993. MOJO was one of the very few titles in the sector to arrest its decline. It rose 0.1% to 106,367 although overall it was down 5.1% year on year from 112,037. MOJO regularly includes a covermount CD which ties in with a current magazine article or theme. In 2004 it introduced the "MOJO Honours List", an award ceremony which is a mixture of readers' and critics' awards. More recently, the magazine has taken to publishing many "Top 100" lists. To celebrate 150 issues, the magazine published a "Top 100 Albums of MOJO's Lifetime" list.

MOJO magazine 1995: The colour is very faded and this does not appeal to me and it is not very eye-catching. The title is in capital letters to make it stand out the most from the rest of the magazine. In the bottom left hand corner, there is an explosion shape with band/band member names. The font colour is in white which is a bold colour against a multi-coloured background. The colour theme seems to be white and brown. Using brown for the font colour and the explosion shape colour does not really make it very appealing to potential readers as it is very bland. Most of the writing on the magazine is in medium and small size. "Exclusive"-If they wanted to pull in more readers then to do this they should have put this is capital letters and an exclamation mark after it because what draws most people to magazines is big, bold, colourful, exciting writing. The image is a close-up of everyone in the bands face. All four of them have a slightly different facial expression. The issue date and price are at the beginning and underneath the title. The bar code is in the bottom right hand corner. The writing in the middle of the magazine is related to the image on the front cover as well. The magazine looks plain and not busy. Magazines that are busy with information about bands, songs and freebies, often pull in more readers as it is more interesting. However, this magazine does not feature any freebies or competitions to attract more readers.

MOJO magazine 2006: The colour theme in the recent MOJO magazines go with what the colour of the album is. In this case the album is red and white, so the magazine colour theme is in red and white. It has a freebie which is a FREE CD! this will pull in more readers. The image is a mid close-up of PINK FLOYD'S, SYD BARRETT who died in 2006, so this is a tribute to him. Because the image is of someone that has died, it is in black and white to show respect and makes it attract attention. The bar code is still in the bottom right hand corner but the price and issue date have moved from underneath of the magazine to where the bar code is now. It is in small writing so readers will have to look closer and possibly buy it. All the writing on the magazine is in capital letters. But mainly band members/bands. Every issue now has an image of an album. This is to promote the album artist and buy reading this magazine you would get an insight into the album and what it features and ratings of it. It has a big name along the top of the magazine beside the FREE CD!
