Research Front Cover 1: KERRANG!

Kerrang! is published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom and is the world's biggest selling weekly Rock magazine. The magazine has been going on for 24 years now and is still strong as ever. Their target audience is anyone that is interested in Rock. In 2008, Kerrang! suffered a big fall dropping 21.6% in the six months to 60,290. It lost 27.9% of its sales last year falling from 83,610. Relentless Energy Drink sponsor Kerrang! In a week the average amount of magazines sold is....The magazine always has the newest and best bands in it. Not many other magazines emphasise that they have huge names such as Muse, Green Day and Slipknot, who are million seeling artists with a huge fan base, in their magazines and on the front covers of the magazine and this is why it is very popular in the UK as it attracts more customers.

Kerrang! 1997 magazine: The title is in capital letters and red and has the cracks throughout it. This is to show that rock music can put cracks in things. The issue date and price of the magazine is on the right hand side a third of the way down in small writing to enable readers to look closer at the magazine. The colour theme is red, yellow and white. The well known names are in large writing to make them stand out more to the average known names which are in smaller writing. This would of attracted potential readers as they would have to look closer and maybe want to buy it. Bar code is in the bottom right hand corner. Advertising freebies when you buy the magazine will attract more readers. In this case the freebies are three POSTERS of bands/band member and a FREE CD! Having two kinds of freebies could potentially pull in more readers. The image is of a mid close-up of the band as the main focus for the main article featured in the magazine. The graphics are poorer to that of the 2009 edition in that the colours look faded and dull which does not make it stand out as much as the brightness and colours on the 2009 edition. They have adapted the magazine so that it is up to today’s modern era and so that it will attract more potential readers and to keep the current readers that buy it all the time.

Kerrang! 2008 magazine: Its design is appealing. It still has a mid close-up of the band/band member as the main focus for the main article featured in the magazine. Other big names are still in medium sized writing but now have an image of them who are also featured in the magazine on the left hand side of the magazine and more band names along the top of the magazine. By doing this it drags in fans of that certain band/band member. The colour theme and the font is white, black and yellow. This is so that it is easily recognised by its audience to make it stand out from other magazines. The writing is still in capital letters and has the cracks throughout it. It also has some small writing again so this would enable readers to look closer. The layout looks busy but not that busy that you cannot see what is going on. All the images are of a member from the band performing at a gig. The bar code is still in the bottom right hand corner. The issue date and the price of the magazine have moved from a third of the way down the right hand side to the bottom right hand corner with the bar code.
